- Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater, nestled within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its stunning beauty. This unique ecosystem boasts breathtaking landscapes, inviting guests to explore the expansive floor of the collapsed caldera, surrounded by the impressive walls of the volcanic rim.
The crater’s nutrient-rich grasses attract around 25,000 large animals, including the iconic black-maned lion, the elusive black rhino, 100 species of birds, and the famed Big 5. Consequently, the game-viewing experience here is nothing short of spectacular. Although overnight stays within the crater are not permitted, visitors can embark on day-trip game drives from accommodations on the crater’s rim or nearby lush highlands. Due to the busy nature of game drives, spending 1-2 nights in the area typically suffices.
However, a significant drawback of the crater is the overwhelming crowds, which are notably more significant than in other regions of Tanzania. During peak seasons, especially from June to October, game drives can resemble chaotic zoos, with long lines of vehicles at the entrances and swarms of people gathered around animal sightings. While the crater offers outstanding game viewing and stunning scenery, visiting during the off-season is the best way to escape the crowds of tourists.
