Katavi National Park

Katavi National Park is a gem in Tanzania’s Southwest Circuit, alongside Selous, Ruaha, and Mahale, and represents the ultimate safari adventure. This park offers some of the finest game viewing in one of East Africa’s most pristine and least explored areas. It’s an ideal spot for thrill-seekers and seasoned safari enthusiasts, though getting there can be more challenging and costly, with flights available only twice a week—similar to Mahale.

This scarcity adds to the exclusivity of the experience, particularly during the dry season when game viewing peaks. Visitors can witness large herds of buffalo, massive pods of hippos crowded into shrinking pools, and impressive crocodiles. The park is also home to significant populations of elephants, lions, and spotted hyenas.

Katavi is typically accessible from June through mid-November, when the plains come alive with zebra, impala, and topi, drawing animals to the banks of the Katuma and Kapapa rivers, the only water sources for miles. In addition to traditional game drives, guests have the option of night drives—where they can spot hippos out of water—as well as walking safaris and fly camping experiences.

With limited accommodations, our favorite lodge in Katavi National Park is Chada Katavi.
