Zanzibar is a tropical paradise known for its stunning sandy beaches, often as a perfect, relaxing conclusion to a Tanzanian or Kenyan safari adventure. The island boasts gentle coral beaches with varying tides, allowing you to stroll along the shore for up to a quarter mile at low tide—sometimes reaching the reefs themselves.
Zanzibar’s rich cultural heritage beautifully complements its acclaimed beaches. One must-see is the mosque in Kizimkazi, which dates back to 1107 and is the island’s oldest standing structure. If you can pull yourself away from the beach, don’t miss exploring Stone Town, the capital city and a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its vibrant culture, the Sultan’s Palace, and impressive mosques.
Water enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy in Zanzibar, with activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, kite surfing, fishing, kayaking, and sailing. For a change of pace from the beach, consider taking a fun (albeit somewhat touristy) Spice Tour or visiting the colobus monkeys at Jozani Forest. While Zanzibar can be enjoyed year-round, it’s best to avoid April, May, and November due to heavy rainfall. The island’s tropical climate can also be quite hot and humid, so opting for a resort with air conditioning is highly advisable.
For the best beach experience with less tidal fluctuation, head to the west coast, extending up to the island’s northern tip. If snorkeling and scuba diving are on your agenda, the waters off Mnemba Island, located just east of the northern shore, offer some of the best opportunities.
